Permanent curb extensions at a school and park intersection, formalizing a temporary Vision Zero pilot built from paint and flexible bollards.
Transportation Services commissioned permanent safety improvements at this intersection to replace curb extensions that had only ever existed as pavement markings and flexible bollards, installed temporarily through the Traffic Safety Local Improvement Program. The corner serves a school, a public library, and a park, so pedestrian traffic skews heavily toward children, families, and seniors, and the permanent curbs are built to shorten crossing distances, improve visibility, and calm traffic where a temporary pilot could only approximate those results.
The design sits inside a broader mobility plan that pairs short-term measures, school safety zones, refreshed crosswalks, driver feedback signs, with longer-term ones: speed humps, raised intersections, curb extensions, and diverters, all aligned with the City’s Vision Zero objectives. Designed April 2025 to August 2025.
